Letter From the President

Dear Delegates of The Human Rights Commission. My name is Jeeda Khraisat, and I am honored to serve as the president of the Human Rights Commission (HRC) for this conference. It is with immense privilege that I welcome you to this year’s Model United Nations conference. The HRC stands as a beacon of hope and accountability, tasked with addressing some of the most urgent and impactful human rights issues of our time. I am certain that this committee will inspire within you a deep sense of responsibility, empathy, and determination as we tackle these challenges together.

In this committee, you are entrusted with examining two critical topics: the plight of war refugees and the establishment of humanitarian corridors in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as well as the question of press freedom in times of war. These are not abstract issues but tangible realities impacting millions of lives. They demand a balance between pragmatism and principle, informed by your understanding of human rights laws, moral imperatives, and the complex dynamics of conflict.

On the issue of war refugees and humanitarian corridors, you must navigate the legal and moral frameworks that uphold the rights of displaced persons. In the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, this becomes particularly critical as civilians face unimaginable suffering and displacement. Your task is to propose actionable solutions that ensure safe passage, access to aid, and protection for those caught in the crossfire. How can the global community ensure that humanitarian corridors remain neutral and effective amidst political turmoil? And what measures can we take to hold all parties accountable to their international obligations?

On the question of press freedom in times of conflict, your discussions will revolve around the fine line between safeguarding national security and protecting the public’s right to information. The press is often both a witness to and a casualty of war, and it is your duty to advocate for the rights of journalists to operate freely, without fear of censorship, violence, or manipulation. How do we balance transparency with security? And what mechanisms can be implemented to ensure that the flow of unbiased information continues, even in the most trying times?

Over the next three days, delegates will delve into these topics with passion and intellect, presenting their ideas and engaging in thought-provoking debates. Every speech, resolution,  and clause you propose is a step toward addressing the global crises we face today. I urge each of you to bring your unique perspectives, bold ideas, and commitment to human rights to the table.

Members of the Human Rights Council, I am eagerly looking forward to the outcomes of your discussions and the solutions you will craft. Let this conference be a testament to the power of cooperation, debate, and the unwavering pursuit of justice and equity. Good luck to each of you—I cannot wait to see the impact you will make.

Jeeda Khraisat
